Wisdom, extracted from Joachim's speech

To make a group highly functional it needs to have two things:

  • A clear goal
  • A well-accepted decision-making system

There are people who tend to give more and people who tend to take more. This can be applied to all areas, be it food, items, energy, attention, love, whatever. It also is not binary, can change depending on the context or group of people interacting with, and the specific area. Still, there are general tendencies.
A group of only givers is very creative and has high output, whereas a group of only takers is lethargic and prone to useless disputes. Giving as well as taking can take place in an open and visible manner or in a hidden one. Already a few hidden takers can lead a group, that perceives itself as a group of givers, to ruin.

Therefore honest communication needs to be possible! It has to be possible to openly state something like "I see you having taker-tendencies. Whenever there's chocolate you take some more and hide it somewhere. That's why you always have some more available, when the public stash is already empty. I'm not trying to blame you, but I think that is problematic behavior in a sharing community."

When people are not addressed as adults, they will never behave like adults. Still, people who are not yet ready to completely take the adult role need some guidance. Authority is not the devil! It sometimes is necessary to give stability to a group and to slowly but steadily empower people. Leadership also is not a bad thing. Hierarchies are unavoidable in the beginning, because that's the organizational structure we are trained to expect. Some people just like to take the lead and some just like to follow. As long as the hierarchies are transparent and subject to discussion and change, they are helpful in that they give clear structure.

Without clear structure lots and lots of energy get wasted.
