Things I thought about/know/can help with

Heating / insulation

  • Old style buildings with massive walls do not need to be insulated except the roof! There is a system that makes the walls themselves the insulating material by drying them out significantly above the normal level. Read here: http://www.temperierung.net/ or english (scientific)
  • I know the system since 20 years because my architect Markus works successfully with it. In the meantime, also “Schloss Tempelhof” has installed it into their castle building. I also know Ulrich Gölz, he has been already in Harzgerode with our group. http://www.schloss-tempelhof.de/vivensys-ulrich-goelz/
  • The system is cheap and efficient and would do a great job in drying out the station’s walls. It can be heated by any water warming means (Solar gas, wood).

Rebuilding and upgrading floors

  • The classic wood beamed ceiling can be renovated by upgrading it with a thin layer of concrete. In the Timco-System the concrete layer is statically bound to the wood, even throughout the existing floor. This way, the concrete does not charge the wood but strengthens the floor. That way you easily reach the floor load requirements for public buildings.
  • I installed the system in my first railway station in 2003. I used it even to level the inclined floors and to create firm wall connections since some abutments (Balkenkopf) were rotten. On top of the concrete I put oak parquet.
  • Except of some m³ of concrete you need only the screws and one layer of standard steel mat. I now have 500 kg/m² load and never experienced the slightest problem.

Roofs

Type 1 – trapezoidal sheet / corrugated sheets

  • You can create a firm roof that can even take additional load of photovoltaic modules
  • Material is long lasting an takes few resources since only under 1 mm thick
  • Can be handled manually, easily screwed, ordered to measure, comes in any color
  • Very few supporting structure needed
  • Roof can be “hacked” in a few days
  • Solar can be installed later
  • But note: It is not insulated and (without solar on top) will be relatively loud when it is raining.

 Calculation of costs:

  • Sheets 7,5-10 € per m² + delivery 800 €
  • 2013 plan says 350 m²
  • 700 € for wood
  • 1500 € for screws and other roofing things, maybe 2 hrs of crane work
  • Total ca. 5700 € incl. VAT without reserve and work

Type 2 – solar roof

  • This is an experiment, but can have a great outcome!
  • Build a more or less classic “Dachstuhl” (wooden roof structure)
  • We have to use KVH/BSH (dimensionally accurate wood)
  • Some solar modules can easily be replaced by glass, so that we have a pretty bunch of light in the hall
  • Combines greatly with off-grid inverter and batteries to provide independent power for Yunity!
  • To have a waterproof roof, the solar modules are interconnected by silicone profiles that are glued with silicone on the upper side
  • From the inside, the modules will be a little transparent, it will look great
  • The wiring can take additional wires for lighting of the hall
  • Hacking of this thing would take a little longer…

Calculation of costs:

  • Ca. 7 m³ of wood, 500 €/m³
  • 520 solar modules, 4 € p.p. (may be paid later)
  • 520 x 1,7 m of silicone profiles, ca. 1 €
  • Other mounting stuff, wiring 2000 €
  • Total ca. 8500 € incl. VAT without reserve and work
  • Optional: Glass 1000 €

Utilities

Gas

  • Build a wall outlet next to the gas counter for now, to connect any gas driven device easily (& much cheaper than bottle gas)

Rain water

  • You need almost nothing to set up a rainwater installation. IBC container for the water, a simple “Hauswasserwerk”, some of those grey waste water pipes and some hose (PE) or even the old water pipes.

Electricity

  • I try to avoid PVC because it is one of the worst polluters. If it burns it generates hydrochloric acid and dioxin, so it poisons your whole building.
  • There are Non-PVC cables, usually called “halogenfrei”, halogen free.
  • Ever dreamed of a most flexible wiring that follows changing demands, room arrangement? Consider WAGO Winsta, this is a most flexible system and available as PVC-free on top.
  • Grid Power
  • A Baustromverteiler could be the easiest and cheapest way to get power of the grid (except asking the neighbor of course!)

Windows

  • The building has double pane windows. They can be replaced, you can see it in this video
  • Only the mullions (Sprossen) are special on the stations windows. They are glued onto the glass. After replacing the pane the mulllions have to be glued onto the new pane. Exactly where the mullions are located, you find an aluminum I-beam between the 2 part-panes to mock the impression of little panes.
  • The panes can be bought here, they also have glazing tools.
  • At the above company one pane would cost around 20 €
  • An idea to finance all 99 broken windows? Sell a little something (principle scout cookies) to all people in BaD to support repair of windows (most people are interested that the building looks neatly, even if they do not care what is inside. Imagine people can “buy” a photo frame with a nice pic of the station and a text: “I financed window No. 43 of Bad Dürrenberg train station” for 50 Euros...

Ever thought of hacking a vending machine to work on credits generated by the yunity app, or for 10 hugs you gave or 10000 steps you took or 3 dumpsters you dived..? (smile)
