WuppDays #6 retrospective

Please find this space to evaluate and reflect upon this WuppDays (#6, Rotterdam). This would more normally be done in person but as everyone is coming and leaving at different times we will try it online to include as much feedback as we can.

The Prime Directive

Please read and absorb the prime directive of this retrospective to feel the constructive and progressive nature of the activity;

"Regardless of what we discover, we understand and truly believe that everyone did the best job they could, given what they knew at the time, their skills and abilities, the resources available, and the situation at hand."

--Norm Kerth, Project Retrospectives: A Handbook for Team Review

Three words

Please describe how you feel with regards to how the WuppDays went in just three words, can be a sentence;

Three questions

Please answer the following questions as many times as you want with brief answers and points for action. Discuss using the commenting feature.

What could have gone better?

  • Ramping-up new participants difficult due to staggered starting times. AP: Have defined starting time(s) (i.e. please arrive before YYYY-MM-DD)
  • Open WuppDays logistically stressful. AP: Assess whether feasible beforehand and devise solid plan.
  • Communication with people around us. AP: make posters about our work and website and talk to neighbours
  • Make tasks more visible. AP: Try an online system (maybe the CCC Engelsystem)
  • Clear communication with property owners. AP: Have regular talks to owners, raise questions immediately. Additionally, having a better plan ahead & things cleared with them
  • Organization of gathering moments to communicate and share our common difficulties and achievements. AP: Organize daily rounds; make sure that we have a comfy place to gather outside of the working spaces and dinning room to relax and connect with each other.
  • Respect of the announced daily rhythm after one week. AP: Re-think the daily life tasks allocation system to avoid free riding and create a smoother rhythm helping everyone to work efficiently on their other goals.
  • Coming together in more frequent meetings (e.g. just one PR meeting). Talking and Listening to each other more often. AP: Scheduling meetings. Evening come togethers without a specific topic. Regular evening rounds.
  • Less time spending in the kitchen. AP: One warm meal at dinner can be enough. For lunch fruits dont have to be cut, everybody can take some fruits or bread and help him/herself.
  • Organize fun activities, sports and team bounding. AP: Somebody who feels accountable for that (best before the WuppDays start, so things can be planned)
  • Daily short get togethers of the different teams similar to the daily scrum of about 15min. to give feedback about current process, open task, questions etc.

  • Have new people from the beginning until the of the WuppDays present

  • More structure and fair division of work load for communal tasks

  • More stability

  • A relaxing/chill-out area

  • A cooking team which help to have more regular eating and therefore more structured wupping time

  • Activities apart of the efficient wupping time

  • Time schedule for meetings and clean/cook for everyone

  • Clarification about rules in the venue of the WuppSpace more clear from the beginning

  • A party for everyone

  • Better PR for the Open WuppDay and reevaulation to maybe change time and length

  • More protein rich food

  • Better kitchen

  • Smaller dorms

What still puzzles us?

  • How can we introduce newcomers to our work and tasks? AP: Try a mentoring system to pair newcomers with experienced wuppers
  • How can we reliably create a good working athmosphere (worked partially well in RD)
  • How are we going to cooperate/collaborate with other organizations, especially those that promote unconditional sharing

What went well?

  • Food discovery and collection
  • The mattresses' collection
  • The open-stage night
  • The Open WuppDay
  • That third persons and organizations perceive yunity as agile, powerful, authentic and integer
  • Amazing flexibility to adjust to the circumstances which we encountered

  • Unbelievable trust

  • Spirit of the group

  • Incredible food (food pick ups)

Round of appreciation

The WuppDays could not have happened without every single individual, for that each of us is thankful for all the others. Take this opportunity to thank just one other person if you feel like it;

  • Douglas Webb - I would like to thank Paul Free for his expansive imagination and cheeky smile. I'm always happy to hear your throat-singing in the stair wells!
  • Elina - I would like to thank Shannon for her beautiful energy and the women's circle initiative that has created a calm space to root myself every time things had become too chaotic.
  • Anja Konhäuser - I would like to thank Tatiana for all her creativity, dedication and inspiration! Her ideas and thoughts are really contagious.
  • Zed Redstone - I would like to thank Douglas Webb for his tireless and rigorous shepherding of the chaos into action.
  • Joachim Thome: I would like to thank Alma for being a light of clarity and honesty whenever there where clouds around me.
  • Philip Engelbutzeder: My special appreciation goes to Douglas Webb. You amaze me every time we see each other more. I'm developing a deep love for you my friend!
  • Raphael Fellmer: I want to thank you my Dear Nick Sellen for your constant cheer and smile which you are spreading and all the love you give the code, documentation and the people around you!
